B. Wingate Williamson, Jr., son of the late Mildred Harding Bauersfeld and Bious Wingate Williamson, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
He was born March 16, 1923, was educated in the public school of Hamlet, attended Wake Forest College until March 1943, then admitted to Dental School at Emory University in Atlanta and graduated on his 23rd birthday in 1946. He served two years in the U. S Air Force as Dental Officer. Dr. Williamson returned to Hamlet and entered into dental practice with his father. In 1952, he returned to the U. S. Air Force and upon re-enlisting, married Carol Barbara DeCover with whom three children blessed their marriage.
Dr. Williamson loved dentistry and his patients, retiring after sixty three years as one of the longest practicing dentists in North Carolina. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hamlet, working faithfully as a Deacon and Elder. Dr. Williamson served as a Hamlet Town Commissioner, chaired the board of Southern National Bank, was owner of the Hamlet Movie Theater for eleven years, and was a member and past president of the Hamlet Lions Club. Dr. Williamson was a dedicated member of the North Carolina National Guard with thirty six years of service, retiring with the rank of Colonel. He was a pilot, especially fond of his flights to Hatteras to fish, and was proud to fly accident free for thirty one years.
A service to celebrate Dr. Williamson’s life was conducted with full military honors 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16th at First Presbyterian Church in Hamlet with Belinda Rice, CLP officiating.
Dr. Williamson is survived by his three children, Sukoshi W. Roberts and husband Paul of Cary, Libba W. Stephenson and husband Tom of Hamlet, and Rusty Williamson and wife Ann of Hamlet; three grandchildren, Wingate Williamson, IV of Durham, Katharine Williamson of Greenville, and Harry Williamson of Greenville. Dr. Williamson was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 2003, and his brother, John, in 2007.
