Tommye Strickland

Tommye Strickland, 74, of Hamlet passed away Monday, July 23, 2018 at First Health Hospice in Pinehurst. She was born October 2, 1943, daughter of the late John and Sallie Herring Strickland.

Tommye was a graduate of Appalachian State University. Upon graduation from Appalachian, she worked for several years in public education. She, then, joined the U.S. Marine Corps, earning the rank of Captain. She worked as a computer programmer for the R. J. Reynolds Co. for many years. Upon her retirement, Tommye returned to Hamlet and did landscaping work. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Hamlet, where she sang in the choir for many years and volunteered her time in a number of church activities. Tommye loved helping people and really enjoyed fishing.

Services were conducted 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 27th in the chapel of Watson – King Funeral Home in Hamlet with Dr. Allison Farrah officiating and interment followed in Richmond Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation was held at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Tommye is survived by a sister, Sue Lewis and husband Terrell of Lake Lure; a brother in law, Harold High; nieces and nephews, Leigh Hammond, Robbie Lewis, Melinda McKay, Caroline High and Harold Worth High, Jr.; and a number of great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Bette S. High.
