Phil Edward “Ed” Dawkins, 84, of Rockingham passed Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at his home. He was born March 20, 1937, in Richmond County, a son of the late Pearson Hill and Gladys Pierce Dawkins.
He retired from CSX Railroad and was a member of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge. He was a 1955 graduate from Rockingham High School where he was a member of the band and played baseball.
He loved flying airplanes, hunting, and fishing, the beach, all sports, his “social club” time at the VFW, working the land with his tractors and backhoe and always accomplished anything he wanted to do. He lived life to the fullest and he did it his way.
But most of all he enjoyed his family, including his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Sweet Haven Church with Rev. Mitchell Roller officiating. Burial will follow at the Dawkins Family Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Judy Dawkins; Children, Donna Dawkins (Crow), Phil Dawkins (Loria) and Ken Dawkins. Grandchildren, Chris Hardee (Jennifer), Sam Williams (Amy), Jason Dawkins (Beth), Jarrod Dawkins (Tara), Kelly Bumgardner (Dustin), and Kara Dawkins. Great grandchildren, Chase and Pailynn Hardee, Rhett and Livy Williams, Laney, Logan, Luke, Jentry, Ledger Dawkins and Brittain Bumgardner; Sibling’s, Pearson Hill “Jr.” Dawkins (Doris), Kenneth Larry Dawkins, Elaine Dawkins Shelton, Cheryl Dawkins Lampley (Wilson) and special friend Jeff Hall. And numerous special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8 pm at Sweet Haven Church and other times at his home.
