Julia Ann Meacham Smith, age 90, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.
Born in Richmond County, North Carolina on February 25, 1929, Julia was the daughter of the late Thomas Garrett Meacham and Jettie Miller Meacham. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of over seventy years, Ottis Brown Smith.

As an accomplished seamstress, she sewed for family and friends. Her sewing abilities were a true gift. She loved all crafts and was an excellent cook. When her children entered school, she began work with Belk Department Store where she enjoyed a career of over thirty years. She worked in the fabric department which she loved. She looked forward to seeing her customers and learning of their projects. The advice and knowledge she brought to her customers was always appreciated. Julia loved flowers, and her yard was beautiful each year, especially her buttercups. She and Brown were a great team in the garden and looked forward to growing fruits and vegetables. Family and friends enjoyed the benefits of their gardening skills.

Julia and Brown enjoyed their entire married life as members of Glenwood United Methodist Church which they joined in 1947. They joined the Rockingham Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1952. She was an active member and cherished the friendships she made through the work of the chapter.

Julia loved her family who will cherish her memory. Surviving are her son, Thomas Brown Smith (Daphne) of Ellerbe, NC; her daughter, Betty Ann Souther (Ray) of Bennettsville, SC; her sister, Louise Harris of Cantonment, FL; grandchildren, Julie Souther Strong (Michael) of Cumming, GA, Lee Souther of Asheboro, NC, Jeannie Souther Jones (Mike) of McColl, SC; and great grandchildren, Reagan and Caroline Strong of Cumming, GA, and Brayden and Harper Jones of McColl, SC.
The family would like to thank special friends Liz Bowden, Rose Bennett, and Peggy Knight for the love and compassion they shared with Julia. The staff of Community Health Care and Hospice will always be remembered for their excellent care, support, and kindness.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 29, 2019, 3:00 P.M. at Richmond Co. Memorial Park. A visitation will follow the service at the gravesite.
