Charles Norman Hughes

Mr. Charles Norman Hughes, 86, of Rockingham passed away at his home surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters on October 14, 2017. He was born March 27, 1931 in Beach, North Dakota, son of the late Robert Owen Hughes and Barbara Holland Hughes.

Charles was retired from the U. S. Army. He, also, worked for the City of Rockingham and Rockingham Fire Department for many years. He was a faithful member of Ledbetter United Methodist Church. Charles was a member of the Rockingham Moose Lodge, Rockingham VFW, and the American Legion.


Charles had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. He always made people smile. He would say, “Smile, God Loves You!” There were many youngsters that thought of Charles as their daddy. They loved him so much and he loved them.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of sixty six blessed and wonderful years, Martha Alice Currie Hughes. He was her life and she was his. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Johnny Owen Hughes. Also surviving are three wonderful daughters who loved him dearly, Barbara Ayer (Mike), Wanda Denise Watkins (Larry), and his precious baby girl, Kathy L. Hughes. He is so loved by his wife and girls. Charles is survived by his wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren that he would have moved mountains for; Charles Michael Smith (Becky Hill) of Sumter, SC, Richard Smith ( Ivita) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Chris Wilson, Jason Wilson, and Jonathan Hughes, all of Rockingham, and Kristen Guinn of Laurel Hill; great grandchildren, Michael Smith II, Jaxson Smith, Savannah Hughes, Braxton Wilson, Kayley and Kristen Conrad, and Ava Guinn; and extended family, Josh, Judy, and Karen Ayer, and Gary Wilson.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm Wednesday, October 18th at Ledbetter United Methodist Church with Rev. Russell Edwards and Rev. Lee Griffith officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 8 pm at Watson – King Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home.
