Dr Bill Haltiwanger

W.L. Haltiwanger, Jr. (90), affectionately known as Dr. Bill, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018 surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Dr. Bill was born in Columbia, SC on February 28, 1928 to W.L., Sr. and Hazel McCullough Haltiwanger. He is survived by his beautiful wife of sixty four years, Marion Helms Haltiwanger, four children: Harriet (Roger) Horn, Cindy (Rick) Watkins, Missy (Ricky) Kirkland and Len (Kim) Haltiwanger; nine grandchildren: Adam Horn, Andrew (Charlotte) Horn, Lindsay (Scott) Kelly, David (Emily) Watkins, Emily (Dan) Morgenstern, Caroline Kirkland, Elizabeth Haltiwanger, Will Haltiwanger and Meredith Haltiwanger, two great-grandchildren Adelaide Horn and Madison Kelly and one brother, Dr. Al Haltiwanger.  Dr. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, W.L. Haltiwanger, III. 

Dr. Bill was a faithful servant to God. He was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet, NC where he spent many happy hours beautifying the grounds of the church he so dearly loved.  He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Marines. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry for twelve years before furthering his education in the specialty of orthodontics.  His love of his profession was very evident and it brought him great joy to bring thousands of smiles to his patients throughout the years.  He was involved in many civic organizations and his achievements were many, but the main qualities which were so outstanding were his humility, his professional excellence, his devotion to his family and church and his devotion to local schools and our community. He loved cutting grass, creating stained glass, watching Raider football, driving around town in his truck “Old Green” and spending time with his family and friends.  One of his greatest gifts was that he always brought gladness and joy to everyone he encountered, whether they were longtime friends or complete strangers.

The visitation was held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet from 11:00 AM -12:30 PM with the funeral service following at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 27, 2018 with Pastor John Pfisterer officiating and interment at Richmond Memorial Park.   

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 311 Marlboro St., Hamlet,  NC 28345.
