Marion Helms Haltiwanger, 94, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, March 16th, 2024. Marion was born February 25th, 1930, in Charlotte, NC to William Horace Helms and Erma Dixon Helms.

She is survived by her four children: Harriet (Roger) Horn, Cindy (Rick) Watkins, Missy (Ricky) Kirkland and Len (Kim) Haltiwanger; nine grandchildren: Adam (Caely) Horn, Andrew (Charlotte) Horn, Lindsay (Scott) Kelly, David (Emily) Watkins, Emily (Dan) Morgenstern, Caroline (Hayden) Poole, Elizabeth (Trevor) Gotkowski, Will (Evelyn) Haltiwanger and Meredith Haltiwanger: great-grandchildren Adelaide Horn, Luke Horn, Madison Kelly, Emma Kelly, Helms Watkins, Austin Watkins, Sammy Morgenstern, Miles Morgenstern, Luna Gotkowski, and Lolli Gotkowski.

Marion is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Samuel Helms, and an infant son, W.L. Haltiwanger, III. She is also preceded in death by her late husband Dr. Bill Haltiwanger, to whom she was married for a blissful sixty-four years before his passing.

Marion loved to travel when she was able, and she especially loved visiting the mountains, the beach and going on an annual NYC trip with her girls. Marion is a graduate of Lees-McRae College in Baner Elk, NC with an associate degree in science as a Medical Secretary. Following college, Marion worked at various hospitals, such as UNC Chapel Hill and Presbyterian Hospitals. Outside of work, Marion was a committed and lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet where she acted as the Choir Director for over forty years. She enjoyed playing the piano, her favorites being church hymns and “boogie woogie” music. Marion also loved animals, she had a unique and special connection that made animals instinctually flock to her. Marion never met a stranger and enjoyed spending time with her special friends and family. She was the best mama and Meme!

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 19th, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet starting at 11:00 A.M. with The Rev. Pam Northrup officiating. A private burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 311 Marlboro St., Hamlet, NC 28345.

The family of Marion wishes to extend their sincere thanks to her longtime care giver Geneva Hodges. Geneva took care of both Marion and the late Dr. Bill for eight years. Geneva is more than a caregiver, she is a member of the Haltiwanger Family.
