George Leonard Glenn III, age 76, passed away on Wednesday October 4th, 2017.

George was born in Hamlet N.C. on November 23rd, 1940, the son of George Leonard Glenn Junior and Camille Brown Glenn Frierson. He spent his childhood in Hamlet, graduating from Hamlet High School in 1959. Afterward, he attended Catawba College and Wingate College. George enlisted in the Army in 1962 and was stationed in Dallas, Texas. Following his military service, he returned to Hamlet and took a job with Southern Bell, where he worked for 29 years in various positions, including a final posting in Sunnyvale, California. After his retirement from Southern Bell, George served as Executive Director for the North Carolina One Call Center from its inception in 1991 until his retirement in 2011. George’s knowledge of telephone system infrastructure made him a figure of authority in this emerging field of business and he went on to serve on the organization’s national board. An avid sportsman, George played high school baseball and basketball and college basketball. He never lost his passion for sports, whether it was playing golf with friends and co-workers, or traveling to Chapel Hill to watch the football and basketball games of his beloved Tar Heels. George was a member of the Cameronian Presbyterian Church in Rockingham.
 George was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Stephen Bradley Glenn.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Atkinson Glenn; his son Michael Gregory Glenn and his wife Kaori Takahashi. He leaves behind many cousins, relatives by marriage, friends and colleagues who will feel the emptiness of his passing.

A memorial service for George will be held on Saturday October 7, 2017 at the Cameronian Presbyterian Church, 179 Northam Road, Rockingham, NC 28379. The memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Phil Joines and Reverend Richard Stone at 11:00 a.m. A reception for friends and family to celebrate George’s life will be held in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
